Details

40cm Standing Buddha

Carved from one solid piece of Suar wood. Finished with lovely rich red/brown satin teak stain.

All our Buddhas statues are carved, by hand, by local crafts men and women in Bali. We fully support a true fair trade ethic, we rent scooters or motorbikes locally, and visit and negotiate in person with local people with no agent, we even eat locally with the suppliers. We enjoy it, except for the odd bout of Bali Belly. We are not a member of a fair trade foundation or body, simply because to join one involves monetary membership fee.

Suar wood (Samanea Saman) is an average hardwood with a straight grain making it easy to carve and finish with a high gloss. It is a native rain tree of South America but has been dispersed throughout the tropics for at least 100 years. It is a fast-growing and easily replaceable wood and is very popular outside of the tropics because it's criss-crossed, interlocking grain aids the wood from cracking when moved to drier climates. It grows wide, fast.

The colour of the wood varies greatly between the centre and outer edges of the tree. Therefore very interesting multi-coloured sculptures are crafted with this wood. It can vary from being quite white to a a very dark almost red colour. There can be the odd black spot or patch.

Because the trunk is huge in mature trees, Suar wood is very suitable for creating very large sculptures, however items are usually no larger than 75 centimetres (33 inches) long. If you took a block of pine wood and bit it, you would see your teeth marks, with suar it is hard to leave any marks at all, its quite hard so knocks on a suar wood ornament usually survive unscathed. Like any wooden item moved from a tropical climate there is still a risk of cracking.
